From our collection: landscape photography

Interpretation Developer Ruth Leach explores the photography in our collection.

While we were putting together our latest exhibition with the Landscape Photographer of the Year awards, I took the opportunity to look at how some of the photographs in our collection had captured similar compositions.

I love the way the trees frame this image of the Royal Border Bridge at Berwick upon Tweed.

Many of the images in our collection were taken by railway companies, who had unrestricted access to the lineside. This image of British Railway’s Ivanhoe crossing the Forth Bridge, reminds me of this year’s winning image by David Cation.

The incline at Shap is another favourite amongst photographers. I like this image as it shows a Class 40 battling up the line, rather than a more traditional steam locomotive shot.

  1. I left a few sample photographs with the museum, last Autumn, & told the people in library reception that I have several thousand more, if they are interested. { Period, mostly 1961-68, with a few more recent ]
So far, they have not got back to me.

    1. Hi Greg, we do get a large number of offers of donations of objects and images and thank-you for considering us. With nearly 2 million photographs in the collection we are still cataloging and digitising those we already have and considering new acquisitions does take time. If your images don’t make it into the collection we do have a very active community on our Facebook page who share lots of pictures. If you wanted to share some of your favourites on this page we’d love to see them. https://www.facebook.com/nationalrailwaymuseum
