Find out what's been going on in the workshop at Locomotion.
This afternoon, the restoration of the five-ton-capacity Smith Rodley steam crane in the Shildon workshops took a big step forward when Richard and Johnny fitted the jib for the first time. It’s only on for a trial basis, whilst we measure up for new ropes, check alignment etc, but it does look good – as well as giving us an idea of the size of the completed item. Here, with the jib suspended from the gantry crane and the other end on the fork lift truck, Johnny helps to align the jib whilst Richard tweaks the other end.
Soon afterwards, all is lined up and the locating pins put in. Richard & Johnny take the strop off the end of the jib and rest the middle of it on some sleeper packing.
Long isn’t it? Painting next…

Hello. I’m a digital modelmaker/3D precision print specialist based in Halifax. Keeping a low profile I am releasing product through clients but am close to launching my own brand. Part of that release is a full 1920 warehouse scene with figures, accessories, electectric truck and assorted barrels & box’s. What I would like to add is a Smith & Rodley crane in various marks. Either I can wander the country measuring one up, their is one on the canal at Rodley W.Yorks or… Ask if you have any reference plans I can borrow. The latter would see the Museum credited for their kind assistance, see a donation on every unit sold and if you want units in you gift shop supplied at very favourable and almost exclusive retail terms. The model is to be produced in 00 & 0 Gauge in standard/narrow guage and optional static version. We have been told by the Scale-Four Society we are fine-scale out of the box and produce some of best 3D models & figures in Europe. The temporary website shows the River Banwy Bridge on the Welshpool & Llanfair with it’s 1400+ rivet heads (I am that accurate). Phil
